FAQs

How do I claim my FiT?

Each utility company chooses how it will deal with billing and FiT. Once you have reiceved your compliance certificate, you should contact your utility company for their claim form.

How long will it take to earn my money back?

The average cost of a 1.8kWp system is £9,000 (including VAT). Combining the amount saved from electricity you are no longer buying from your supplier and the income produced it would take an average of 8 years to earn your money back. However, the FiT scheme pays out for 25 years meaning you would still be producing an income for the next 17 years.

Will it supply all my electricity needs?

An average household consumes 3000kWh per year. A 1.8 kWp system should supply nearly 50% of your electricity needs over a year.

Can I get a grant for installing a solar electricity system?

No, until 24th May 2010 a grant was available from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme, but the government has now stopped this and introduced the new Feed In Tariff which offers longer term benefits. Please see the low carbon buildings website for more information.

Is planning permission required to install a solar electricity system?

Most residential properties do not require planning permission. However, there are some exceptions such as if the property is within a conservation area or a listed building. You should contract your local authority who will be able to confirm.

How long does it take to install a solar electricity system?

On average installation takes approximately 3-5 days on site and will require the erection of scaffolding.

How long will a solar electricity system last and what are the guarantee periods?

PV cells are estimated to have a lifespan of 25 to 35 years on average. Our panels have a manufacturer’s warranty of 25 years. Inverters are generally guaranteed for at least 5 years and workmanship is guaranteed for 2 years.

What happens if there is a power cut?

In most cases homes are entirely grid connected. If there is a power cut the solar system is automatically switched off as a safety measure, designed to stop electricity leaking on to the national grid and to protect individuals who may be working to restore the power supply.

What maintenance is needed?

The panels need limited maintenance during their lifetime. However, they do need to be kept clean and free from overhanging trees or plants.

What is a kilowatt peak?

A kilowatt peak (kWp) is the measurement of energy generated by a photovoltaic cell.

Is my roof suitable for solar panels?

Solar panels can be installed on nearly every type of roof (except north facing), but ideally roof conditions should include a 30 – 45 degree pitch; south/southeast/southwest facing and have no surface shading, such as overhang from nearby trees.
