Feed in Tariff

In April 2010 the government introduced the Feed in Tariff (FiT). This tariff obliges utility companies to purchase electricity from households producing energy through solar panels at a fixed, above market rate, set by the government.

How the feed in tariff scheme works

The utility provider pays a fixed sum to the householder for every unit of electricity the solar panels generate and also an additional sum for every unit of electricity that is not used and exported back to the national grid.

Once a system has been registered, the tariff level is guaranteed for 25 years and index-linked (adjusted to the retail price index).

Beware of cowboys! You will only qualify for the full Feed in Tariff payments if the installation is carried out by a MCS certified installer like GSE Solar Systems.

What do you get from the FiT?

A homeowner will reiceve two financial benefits from the Feed in Tariff over the next 25 years:

  • 21.0p for every kW produced by the solar panels. If the property is new build this is slightly less at 21.0p per kW produced.
  • 3p for every kW sold back to the national grid.

All of our quotations are individually designed and priced according to your requirements and the area of roof or land that is being considered. However, our prices for a standard installation using Monocrystaline 250W panels, fully inclusive of all equipment and materials needed would start from the guide prices shown above**

The tariff levels shown above will only be relevant on all installations completed and registered before 31 March 2012. If your solar panels are installed after this date, the rate you would receive from every unit of electricity your system generates decreases.

How do you claim

Once the installation is completed, GSE Solar Systems will register you on the FiT database and you will receive a certificate confirming compliance. This then needs to be passed to your energy supplier. A list of energy suppliers who can provide FiTs can be found on the OfGem website or alternatively contact your supplier for their policy details.
